Pass mark —  There is no fixed pass-mark for the admission test. On completion of the test, all candidates will receive an age adjusted and standardized score.

Other exam information:

  • A non-refundable fee of £50 required for registration.

  • The English paper includes comprehension and writing.

  • The verbal reasoning paper includes a short practice paper before the main paper.

  • The mathematics paper has two sections, one asking short and straight forward questions and one with longer questions testing problem-solving.

  • A reference from the child’s current school will be required to be submitted as part of the school’s admission process.

  • An interview will also be conducted by the headteacher.

  • The entrance examinations are held in the January of year 6.

School Summary

St Ambrose College was established in 1946 and is an all-boys, Roman Catholic grammar school in Altrincham, Cheshire. The school became an academy in 2012 and specialises in maths and computing. The entire school was rebuilt in 2012 after becoming an academy. 

The school’s sports facilities include a swimming pool, sports hall and gym. Sport is central to the school’s extracurricular activities. The main games are rugby, cricket and cross-country, but there are many others. Drama is strong at the school with a major production each year as well as other events. Boys are actively involved in the liturgical life of the school.  Music, too, is strong with a fine choir, who have taken part in recitals in Cathedrals in Chester, Norwich, Worcester and York Minster.

CEM SELECT ONLINE FAMILIARISATION TEST

Exam Information

Exam style — School’s own exam and CEM Select.

Exam types:

  • English

  • Maths

  • Verbal Reasoning

  • CEM Select (verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning)

Exam length — Unknown.

Pass mark —  There is no fixed pass-mark for the admission test. On completion of the test, all candidates will receive an age adjusted and standardized score.

Other exam information:

  • The CEM Select is a computer based online assessment that assesses verbal, non-verbal and numerical reasoning. This is the first stage of exams.

  • The second stage of exams consists of an English, maths and verbal reasoning examination. These are written papers.

  • A progress report from the child’s current school is required to be summited as a part of the admission process

  • The English paper tests creative writing.

  • Entry to the school is dependent on the child’s results on the entrance exams and also on the submitted progress report.

  • The students will be given a questionnaire to fill that will give the school some insight on each student’s personal interest.

  • The entrance examinations take place in the February of year 6.

Exam length — 72 minutes.

The CAT4 test is composed of 8 short tests assessing the following subsections of the four areas above:

    1. Figure Classification (10 mins)

    2. Figure Matrices (10 mins)

    3. Verbal Classification (8 mins)

    4. Verbal Analogies (8 mins)

    5. Number Analogies (10 mins)

    6. Number Series (8 mins)

    7. Figure Analysis (9 mins)

    8. Figure Recognition (9 mins)

  • CAT 4 is a computer based cognitive abilities test that assesses the child’s ability in verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning.

  • A non-refundable fee of £30 is required for registration.

  • The assessment takes place in the January of year 6.

  • There will also be an interview with the headmaster as part of the admissions process.

School Summary

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls was established in 1910 and  is an all-girls grammar school in Altrincham, Cheshire. The school became an academy in 2011 and specialises in languages. It is one of the largest, single-sex grammar schools in England.

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls was one of the first schools to be designated as a National Teaching School, and it is a lead school in maths, science, PSHE and languages. 

It is one of the highest achieving grammar schools in the country, with students consistently achieve top exam results. Recently, the school had a 100% GCSE pass rate.
