About the School
Address — Watford Grammar School for Boys, Rickmansworth Road, Watford, Hertfordshire, WD18 7JF
Type of school — Boys, partially selective, grammar school
Cost — Free
Pupils in school — 1400+
Places available in year 7 — 220+ (25% of which are selective)
Average applicants per place — 4 or more
Catchment area — Watford Grammar School for Boys has a catchment area.
The admission area comprises the Watford area and the ‘rest of the admission area’. The postcodes in each area are not listed in priority order. All postcodes are treated equally within each area unless there is a need to operate the tie-break.
Oversubscription policy — Before the application of oversubscription criteria, students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the school and who have passed the assessment will be admitted. As a result of this the published admissions number will be reduced accordingly.
Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:
Community places:
Looked After Children and children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a child arrangements order or a special guardianship order).
Boys whose normal home address is nearest to the school and who would not be allocated a place under any other criterion (up to 22 places, 10% of the total admissions).
Boys with a parent who is a permanent member of the school staff. To qualify, the member of staff must either have been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission is made or have been recruited to fill a post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage. In all cases, the member of staff must have parental responsibility (sole or shared) for the boy.
Boys with a sibling (brother) enrolled at the school, excluding brothers who first entered the school in the Sixth Form (Year 12 or Year 13).
Boys with a sibling (sister) enrolled at Watford Grammar School for Girls, excluding sisters who first entered the school in the Sixth Form (Year 12 or Year 13).
Places will then be allocated to boys in increasing distance order using straight line distance between the boy’s normal home address and the school.
Specialist (selective) places:
Boys selected on the basis of aptitude for music as measured by the school's assessment procedures, in merit order (up to 22 places, 10% of total admissions).
Boys selected by academic ability as measured by the school’s assessment procedures, in merit order (up to 56 places, 25% of total admissions).
School Summary
Watford Grammar School for Boys was established in 1704 and is an all-boys, partially-selective grammar school in Watford, Hertfordshire. The school became an academy in 2010 and is part of the South West Herts School Grammar School Consortium.
Watford Boys specialises in science and is one of the highest-achieving state schools in the country. This is especially impressive when noting that this is a partially selective school and there is a wider range of ability than is the case in many grammar schools.
Pupils are offered numerous extracurricular activities, clubs and excursions throughout the school year.
