Oversubscription policy — Before the application of oversubscription criteria, eligible students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the school will be admitted. As a result of this the published admissions number will be reduced accordingly.

 Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:

  1. Looked after children and all children who were previously looked after who achieved a qualifying mark.

  2. Children who appear to have been in state care outside of England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted.

  3. 174 candidates who achieve a qualifying mark in rank order.

  4. Up to six students, who achieve a qualifying mark, who are registered and in receipt of the pupil premium at the date of testing. Evidence will be required at the time of allocation.

  5. Other candidates who achieve a qualifying mark in rank order.

To resolve any tied positions within this list the following criteria will be used (strictly in this order):

  1. Students who are registered and in receipt of the pupil or service premium at the date of testing. Evidence will be required at the time of allocation.

  2. Children of a member of staff who has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission to the school is made or Children of a member of staff who is recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage.

  3. The mark for the DHSB English paper.

  4. If there is still a tie, then distance from DHSB will be used to favour those living nearer to the school.

Devonport High School for Boys was established in 1896 as a specialist engineering college.  Today it is an all-boys’, grammar school in Plymouth, Devon. The school became an academy in 2011 and specialises in engineering, languages and applied learning.

Exam length — 3 x 40-50 minute exams.

Pass mark — Changes each year. An average of the two GL Assessment multiple choice papers (Mathematics and English reading) is used to rank each child as either A, B or C.

  • An A ranking means that your child has passed the tests and can apply for a place at the school.

  • A B ranking means that your child has passed the tests and can apply for a place at the school. Your child's rank in the tests means that he may be put on the waiting list for a place in Year 7.

  • A C ranking means that your child has not qualified and cannot be considered for a place at this selective school.

All candidates must also pass the school written English writing paper to be considered eligible. This pass mark also changes every year.

Other exam information

  • All questions in the GL papers will be multiple choice.

  • The creative writing paper ask students to plan and write a descriptive/persuasive piece. Pupils will be marked on sentence structure, punctuation, composition, spelling and vocabulary.

  3. The remaining places available will be ranked according to the 11+ exam score.

If it proves impossible to discriminate between candidates on the basis of the above criteria, those students living closest to the school will have priority. The shorter distance is afforded the higher priority.

Churston Ferrers Grammar School was established in 1957 and is a mixed, grammar school in Torbay, South Devon. The school specialises in humanities and became an academy in 2011.

Churston consistently ranks in the top 150 schools nationally for both GCSE and A Level results. The school has links with many schools in Europe and Peru, focusing on environmental issues. In 2007, it was named as a Lead School in south-west England for sustainability.
