Oversubscription policy — Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Looked after children and previously looked after children who have passed the selection tests.

  2. Children whose normal/habitual place of residence lies within the priority area subject to their passing the selection tests (in rank order). 144 places max.

  3. Children whose normal/habitual place of residence lies outside the priority area subject to their passing the selection tests (in rank order). 

In the event of pupils achieving the same mark for the last available place, priority will be given to any child entitled to ‘preferential consideration’; then, if this does not differentiate, to the pupil who lives closest to the school as measured in a straight line from the front door of the child’s home to the nearest pupil entrance to the school.

Please note - 10% of places reserved for pupils living within the priority area and for pupils living outside the priority area are designated for children who exceed the pass mark and who are entitled to ‘preferential consideration’, including looked-after children and those entitled to Free School Meals.

Southend High School for Girls was founded in 1913 and is situated in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. It is an all-girls grammar school with mixed sixth form. It became an academy in 2011. 

The school specialises in languages with students having the option of learning either French, German or Spanish. It holds Healthy Schools status, the International School award and the Eco-Schools award. The school was most recently rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in all inspection areas.

Exam topics:

  • English and Verbal Reasoning

Exam length — 2 × 1 hour exams (plus 10 minutes reading time).

Qualifying score —  303 (for inside the school’s catchment area, outside is often considerably higher).

Other exam information:

  • The English paper will consist of comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, creative/extended writing, and applied reasoning (literacy and verbal). 

  • The Mathematics paper will consist of questions consistent with KS2 National curriculum and applied reasoning (mathematical/non-verbal).

  • The overall score will have a 50:50 weighting - English (50%) and Mathematics (50%).
